GPCA Global Tech Council Meeting: Key Takeaways

#LeadershipCouncils

The Global Tech Leadership Council convened recently. Here are some key takeaways:

  • Re-ups face greater scrutiny, even for trusted GPs. LPs remain committed to longstanding relationships but are more disciplined, requiring clear evidence of performance and the ability to generate DPI — not just IRR — in today’s liquidity-constrained venture environment.
  • China's repositioning is driving a reassessment of institutional capital across Asia. India’s liquidity is attracting global VC investment, while Japan’s growing tech is drawing new venture interest in a market long dominated by buyout firms.
  • Experienced founders are increasingly acting as angel investors in Brazil and Japan, investing with established managers to reinforce local ecosystems and support the next generation of startups.
  • Public listing sentiment is improving, highlighted by fintech Chime’s June IPO, which signals a potential reopening for global startups' listings.

In March 2020, Mediterrania Capital Partners invested in Akdital, a Morocco-based private hospital group in Africa with several types of multidisciplinary healthcare facilities — including general and specialty hospitals, outpatient clinics and long-term treatment centers.

With Mediterrania's support, Akdital has grown rapidly by opening 22 hospitals, including one per month from June to October 2024, and increasing its bed capacity from 550 to over 3,700. The company introduced new medical services across its Casablanca hospitals and expanded into new regions nationwide, including underserved areas, through the launch of small satellite hospitals. Since Mediterrania’s investment, Akdital has created over 2,800 jobs and now employs more than 4,000 people, 76% of whom are under the age of 25. Women make up 80% of staff, 63% of managers, 43% of senior leaders and 44% of the board.
