GPCA Latin America Council Meeting: Key Takeaways

#LeadershipCouncils

The Latin America Leadership Council convened last week led by Council Chair Ana Zarruk of Pantheon. Here are some key takeaways:

  • Mexico stands to gain from global trade shifts, but private investors remain cautious amid ongoing market uncertainty and slower corporate decision-making cycles.
  • Private credit is on the rise across Latin America, fueled by high interest rates, debt restructurings and highly concentrated banking sectors. Investors are capitalizing on opportunities in structured transactions and legal claims, particularly in Brazil.
  • Fundraising dynamics are evolving, with increased activity in secondary markets and a move toward single-LP separately managed accounts (SMAs), as global LPs seek liquidity and more flexible, cost-efficient structures.

In March 2020, Mediterrania Capital Partners invested in Akdital, a Morrocco-based private hospital group in Africa with several types of multidisciplinary healthcare facilities — including general and specialty hospitals, outpatient clinics and long-term treatment centers.

With Mediterrania's support, Akdital has grown rapidly by opening 22 hospitals, including one per month from June to October 2024, and increasing its bed capacity from 550 to over 3,700. The company introduced new medical services across its Casablanca hospitals and expanded into new regions nationwide, including underserved areas, through the launch of small satellite hospitals. Since Mediterrania’s investment, Akdital has created over 2,800 jobs and now employs more than 4,000 people, 76% of whom are under the age of 25. Women make up 80% of staff, 63% of managers, 43% of senior leaders and 44% of the board.
