Data Insight: What Comes Next for the "Capital of Capital"

The US and Israel’s military conflict with Iran has disrupted supply chains, damaged energy infrastructure and introduced a new wave of uncertainty for private capital investors in the Middle East. Nonetheless, new announcements from global fund managers are signaling sustained commitment to the region following a record 2025 for fundraising and investment activity.

GPCA Asia Council Meeting: Key Takeaways

GPCA's Asia Council convened recently, led by Council Chair Brian Lim of Pantheon Ventures. Highlights of the discussion include:

  • The Middle East conflict has had a muted near-term impact on portfolios, with GPs maintaining deployment. Focus has shifted to second-order risks, such as inflation, supply-chain disruptions, currency pressure and potential FY27 earnings impacts.
  • Regional divergence is shaping risk and opportunity: Japan faces overheating and pricing discipline concerns, China is seeing a surge in AI- and robotics-driven activity, and India is experiencing short-term strain amid energy and market pressures, despite strong long-term fundamentals.
  • AI disruption is emerging as a central theme, with investors focused on its impact — particularly on software — while selectively deploying capital into infrastructure, semiconductors and digitalization opportunities across Asia.
