GPCA Middle East Council Meeting: Key Takeaways

The GPCA Middle East Council convened last week, with the meeting led by Council Chair Dr. Karim El Solh of Gulf Capital. Here are some highlights:

  • International fund managers are establishing offices in the Middle East, increasing competition for deals, and driving valuations higher, while also creating more exit opportunities for local firms.
  • Local fund managers create value by navigating complex shareholder structures, strengthening governance and preparing assets for large global buyers.
  • The Gulf is viewed as a relatively risk-neutral region, appealing to Chinese investors seeking stable, two-way investment corridors. Gulf sovereign investors have built sizable on-the-ground teams in Hong Kong, Beijing and Singapore, reflecting growing direct investment into Asia.
  • Unlike many other emerging markets where currency volatility erodes dollar returns, Gulf markets remain attractive due to their currencies being pegged to the US dollar.
  • Global private capital firms are increasingly covering Gulf investments from Mumbai and Dubai rather than London.
