GPCA Energy Council Meeting: Key Takeaways

GPCA's Energy Council convened recently, led by Council Chair Lucy Heintz of Actis. Highlights of the discussion include:

  • Geopolitical instability has shifted the focus from pure decarbonization to energy security. Asian markets are increasingly adopting a "barbell strategy" — balancing essential coal-fired power with accelerated renewable investment to reduce reliance on vulnerable Middle Eastern energy corridors.
  • Despite currency and public market fluctuations, long-term infrastructure remains a priority for LPs seeking to diversify away from conflict-exposed zones and US concentration. Latin America and Southeast Asia are emerging as key beneficiaries due to high demand for grid resiliency and sustainable projects.
  • While AI-driven power demand is reshaping the US market, it remains a secondary factor in growth markets. Current demand in these regions is primarily fueled by cloud migration, market liberalization and corporate PPAs rather than AI-specific data center scaling.
